A Carnival Wedding

Carnival Weddings

Vintage Carnival and Colourful Circus wedding themes are so much fun! We’ve put together our guide to a carnival wedding, filled with ideas & inspiration.

A Carnival Wedding: The Venue

Picking a venue for a Carnival wedding means looking for beautiful open spaces, lovely landscapes and if you won’t be setting up a marquee, then a hall or reception venue that allows you to add your own special touches in a carnival style!

We’ve listed a few of our favourite South African venues for a carnival wedding below to inspire you!

Beloftebos (Western Cape): Exchange vows under the age-old oak trees in Beloftebos. This romantic and dreamy venue is the ideal setting to host your ceremony as well as a quirky & whimsical carnival-style reception! With lots of open space and the enchanting forest as your backdrop, this is one of our favourite SA venues for a carnival affair!

Everwood Country Estate (Muldersdrift): Everwood offers a beautiful setting for a garden wedding, located conveniently close to Joburg & Pretoria. One of the things we love about Everwood, are the varied landscapes and backdrops for photographs - and of course for an amazing carnival wedding!

Because Everwood offers such lovely large spaces, and lush gardens you have the perfect spot for a carnival-styled spectacular. Their fully draped banqueting hall is a versatile reception venue for a beautiful carnival wedding!

Rosemary Hill (Pretoria): Rosemary Hill is situated on beautiful farmland just east of Pretoria. It is an organic working farm and has been in operation since 1978.

They specialise in earthy, vintage, rustic and chic farm style experience without breaking the bank. Their authentic wooden barn can seat 50-120 guests, and the venue could be the perfect spot for a wonderful Carnival Wedding!

Carnival Wedding Decor

There are so many fun and quirky things you can add to a Carnival Wedding! For your seating chart, why not use Carnival tickets stuck to a board with colourful darts. Another Carnival Seating Chart idea is using a Goldfish bowl for each guest, and having them double up as favours!

One of the loveliest elements about a Carnival wedding has to be streams of colourful ribbons! Use ribbons as backdrops or across your tent or marquee ceiling to make a statement. Instead of using traditional confetti, give guests Wedding Wands instead!

For a truly carnival-themed day, string brightly coloured bunting across open spaces and have cute straw flags or cupcake flags with words like ‘Yay’ or mustaches instead.

Carnival Wedding Games & Entertainment

A Kissing Booth and Other Games
For a Carnival themed wedding why not set up a cute Kissing Booth, use it as a photo prop or get the groomsmen and bridesmaids to take turns dishing out kisses for your Honeymoon Fund!

You can give out carnival tickets to your guests which they can use to play different fun fair games, think ring-toss, rifle games or even foosball!

Hire a Carousel or Ferris Wheel
While something so extravagant might not fit into your budget, a ferris wheel or beautiful carousel would make an amazing addition to a Carnival affair.

Get a Show-stopping Entertainer
If you’re going all-out on your carnival theme for your wedding, you might want to hire some amazing entertainment. Ideas include a fire dancer, a clown on stilts or even a magician. If you’d like something more cost-effective, you could set up a booth with a transfer (not actual) Tattoo Parlour, so your guests can have fun adding vintage-style Carnival Tattoos!

Yummy Carnival Snacks

One of the best things about a fair or carnival, is the delicious food! From popcorn and candyfloss to candy apples and hot dogs. You could also refine these by creating beautiful packaging and keeping the style vintage and whimsical.

Ask your caterer for unique twists on old favourites, like cupcakes like look like Popcorn boxes or gourmet Corn Dogs. Let your imagination guide you for unique Carnival-style treats that will get your guests talking!

Too much or never enough?

Before you set out finding your carnival-themed decor, you might want to decide on a specific colour scheme, and how all-out you’re going to go. There are pretty ways of integrating this theme into your wedding day without having a full-on Carnival. You could also go the vintage route, with softer elements of a Carnival or fair in your wedding decor.
