SA Blooms for a Summer Wedding!

Picking Blooms for a South African Summer Wedding!

Your flowers are a big part of your wedding day! From your bouquet and the boutonnieres, to the centerpieces and your aisle. So how does a South African Bride pick cleverly, and seasonally for a South African summer? And what are some of the latest local trends in wedding flowers?

We asked one of our absolute favourite local event decor companies, ffdecor, who specialise in beautiful floral creations a few questions on wedding flowers for local Brides. Marna from ffdecor gave us her feedback on South African wedding flower trends, how to save by picking seasonal blooms and advice on how you can choose the perfect flowers for a SA summer wedding!

What are a few lovely South African summer flowers Brides can use for a seasonal bouquet?

Are there some budget-friendly bloom options that are more affordable in summer?

Yes. for a South African summer wedding, Sunflowers and Gyps or button sprays make more affordable arrangements for your big day.

What would you recommend for a summer boutonniere?

When choosing flowers for your boutonnieres, pick a flower which lasts. Roses and hard woody stem flowers will always last best. If you pick a soft stem flower for instance a gerbera or a tulip, make sure that your florist packages it correctly so that they will last beautifully and not wilt in the South African heat.

What are some of the latest floral decor trends for the end of 2013 and going into 2014?

In Masterchef you will often hear the chefs calling for the amateur cooks to “put yourself on the plate”. Flowers and décor should resemble you. Your guests know you, and they know your taste. Don’t be afraid to love your flowers and décor in order to make your wedding a part of you so that it is a compliment to who you are and not a question mark!

That being said, although the whites and pastels will always be pretty and elegant and chic the focus has lately moved to plainer linens and more robust bright colours in the flowers. Be careful with mixing strong hues. Colours can go wrong very quickly so consult a professional before you make your final colour palette call!!

Do you have any tips around flowers and decor for Brides having South African summer weddings?

We are on the African Continent. This is not Europe. If you get the majority of ideas and pictures from a European magazine your local florist can only achieve a certain percentage of that vision and no more. Be clever with your choices. Save yourself import costs of flowers and a lot of stress. Local is lekker. Less is more. Those clichés are still very relevant. The best blooms for your climate are grown on farms right here!

Your venue will determine your style of flowers and décor. Your date will determine your blooms. Add your colour palette and consult a professional for all of the above. You only have one chance to get it perfect and a florist with experience has seen and done it all. Make use of the knowledge and experience your décor and florist staff so that your day will be all and more than you could have ever dreamed of!
